Garmin makes a lot of watches with multiple features and sizes within each model which can be very confusing when looking at their website. Based on our experience we put together a simple comparison of our favorite Garmin watches. All of us here at Sportfish Outfitters wear different models. The most popular watches for our customers are Quatix series with all the extra marine features, the Fenix series which is the multi sport line and the Descent which is dive specific.

First, figure out the series you want based on specific style and features. Then learn what we call the Garmin language within each series and determine what size watch you want. Then you can narrow it down and compare on the Garmin site between 4 watches. This simple guide will at least help you understand how to choose and narrow down your choices.

If you compare the Fenix (multisport adventure), Quatix (navigation features), and Descent (dive watch) you will find they are mostly the same except for some minor differences in features specific to the category they are in. For example all standard size models have similar features. If you change size within the series then a few other features change as well. The Fenix is missing marine features that are included in the Quatix so if boating features are important to you go straight to the Quatix line.

Above is Standard (no LED), 7x (solar and larger case), and Sapphire

Quatix 7 only comes in 3 options -  standard, sapphire or solar

Quatix 7x is not a sapphire display but it is larger and only comes in solar.

When it comes to Garmin watch size the choices can get a little confusing, especially with the Fenix line. The chart below will give you an example of just the differences in size in the Fenix line and at the end of this article the flow chart will help understand sizing as well compared to the other models.

    BAND SIZE

    WRIST CIRCUMFERENCE

    CASE DIAMETER

    SCREEN SIZE

    fenix 7S

    20 mm

    108–182 mm (4.25-7.16”)

    42 mm

    1.2"

    fenix 7

    22 mm

    125–208 mm (4.96-8.18”)

    47 mm

    1.3"

    fenix 7X

    26 mm

    127–210 mm (5-8.26”)

    51 mm

    1.4

Essentially within each size range the only differences with Fenix 7 standard, solar and sapphire solar are battery life, screen material and case material.

    Garmin Language

    • Solar - solar charging which increases battery life in most normal modes by roughly 20-30%

    • Sapphire - Higher resolution AMOLED display
    • S - (yes they have just S) this just indicates the smaller case and display size. The flow chart below will help outline that.
    • X - large case
    • i - air monitoring (Descent only)
